Long haired cats with matted hair?

I have 2 male cats with long hair. One has many matted knots of hair and not sure what to do. Their mostly on his back and gets mad when i try to comb them out. I thought of having him shaved since its summer time. but is that the best thing to do for a cat. It feels terrible when i pet him, all lumpy and knotted. Will his hair grow back and how long will it take.

It is painful for the cat if you try to comb the matted fur out yourselves. The best thing for you to do is bring both of them to the Vet and have them shaved. The cats will feel and look much better. Yes the hair will grow. When it does, it will come in very smooth and fluffy. I don't know how it will take but it should take two long.

I used to have a long hair cat. No matter how much we would brush him his hair would always get matted.

About once a year we would get him shaved (or sometimes twice if he needed it)....

The cat was embarased (he would hide behind a chair for the first few hours after we bought him home) but after a while he got used to it.

The hair does grow back pretty quickly.. (I dont quite remember how long it took. A few months I'd imagine)

Shaving them is the best way to go. Those mats can be very painful for your cats. My next door neighbor just had her cats shaved and they left the legs. They look so cute, it looks like they have snow boots on. Take care. All the best;~)

If you don't want to shave him, get a knot breaker (it'll have 4 curved hooks that fit down under the matted area and actually cut through the hair). It's not likely that you'll have much luck if his knots have actually turned to mats. As an owner of several long-haired cats I can tell you that while they don't like the process of getting shave, it's actually much nicer for them to be shaved. They don't get hairballs from all the shedding and your house and clothes will be a lot less hairy. It does, however, take some time for the hair to come back. It can take anywhere between 4 and 8 months for them to get their entire coat back, and there will be times where the hair does look less than fantastic, but it's well worth it...both for you and for them. In fact, a couple of my cats love it so much, they stay shaved pretty much year round, going under the clippers every 6 months, and every 2 months for a bum shaving. Good luck

yeah id say get the poor babys shaved, i used to shy my persian as she hated all the knots, and it can be a health hazard for them as it van pull the skin, becoming red and sore,

flys can lay egs in them causing maggots to be in the fur,

if ur worried bout them gettin cold u can get them a wee jumper.

good luck,

I have known many people who have cats with long hair that have them groomed, you don't have to have them shaved to the skin which would be bad,

If you cat doesn't want to be groomed it may because there is to much to comb out and you are trying to do it all a once, try doing a little at a time, or cutting out the really big ones with a small sharp pair of scissors, like the ones you can get in the sewing aisle for embroidery, sometime you can get "one handed" embroidery scissors that are easier to use while you're calming your baby with the other hand.

You can also get a variety of combs made especially for mats including something I use called a mat cutter for the really troublesome ones. This comb has protected blades that quickly cut the mat into sections that make it easier to remove.

It is important to get the mats out as other problems like abscesses can sometimes form in the skin under the mat, that's a bad thing.

If you start with the grooming, yes the hair will grow back, quite quickly, cant say exactly, like humans they are all unique

My kitty (long haired senior cat) had knotts. I decided to always keep him shaved. His first time he was so shy and hide. I would compliment him and really upset at people that laughed. He actually enjoyed his haircuts. He was proud and felt good. To me he was geourgous long haired or no hair

I have long haired cats and they get shaved several times a year.

Shaving them also helps on the cat hair around the house.

Have the groomers shave them like a lion, leave a small main, their tails and legs..... Shave just their bodies.

If you want to try to comb them every day, try using baby powder, it separates the hair but, it's a lot of work to comb them everyday.

(just remember the matted hair pulls on your cats skin)
